Kairėnai was mentioned in written resources for the first time in about 1545. At different times it was owned by the noblemen families - Isakauskiai, Sapiegos, Tyzenhauzai. In the 18th-19th c. Kairėnai mansion was owned by Lapacinskiai family. They renewed the old houses, built several outhouses, freshly rearranged the pools and water channel system, reconstructed former old park. In the end of the 18th century mansion houses suffered from huge fire. New one-storey and wooden houses instead of the burned-down buildings, were built in the beginning of the 19th c. In the first half of the 19th c., Kairėnai mansion was a place for active cultural life. As often as not, Vilnius elite visited musical evenings, theatre performances here. It was the concern of the master of the house – Mrs. Darata Marikonytė- Lapacinskienė. At that time Kairėnai mansion had a small paper mill, several water mills beside Viršupio stream. In 1870, Kairėnai mansion was bought by earl Juozapas Tiškevičius, and in 1899 it came to Stolypinai family. In 1933-1974, Kairėnai mansion was used as psycho neurological hospital, and in 1974, the remaining buildings and a 150ha of land together with the old Kairėnai mansion park were transferred to Vilnius University, and Vilnius University Botanical Garden was established (area of the park with the buildings makes 21,7 ha). The established botanical garden received also the buildings of former mansion – stabling, mill, cottar’s house, coach house, and icehouse. After ruthless times and various hardships, the old Kairėnai landscape park looked noticeably thin, but new owners added collections of botanical plants (150 ha territory holds 21 species of tress, 20 species of bushes, 11 species of shrubs and subshrubs, medicinal herbs, various fruiters and berry shrubs, flowers, also genetic collections) and area blossomed with new color. Beside the old local trees (Norway maples, ashes, littleleaf linden, Pedunculate oaks, silver and white birches, bird cherry …) garden is flushed with various rare exotic plants, trees and bushes nowhere seen in Lithuania. During the last two decades, botanical garden in Kairėnai became one of the richest gardens in the Baltic states – all of it a merit of devoted employees.
It is gratifying to know that botanical garden grows more and more beautiful and the former, but forgotten traditions of Kairėnai mansion revive once more – music sounds, loud poetical verses flow in the shades of the old linden where the enlighted people of Vilnius meet... And all this action is a sign of long and meaningful existence of Kairėnai park.
